What it covers

Common reasons people request a justificante

Whether you've missed work, school, or a paid commitment, a justificante médico documents that a doctor has assessed your situation.

Sick day at work

A doctor's note to document an absence for your employer. Your diagnosis stays private — only the apto/no apto verdict is shared.

School & university absence

For students who missed class, or parents justifying a child's absence. Accepted by schools and universities across Spain.

Exam deferral

Reschedule a university exam, driving test, or professional certification when illness makes it impossible to sit.

Gym & class cancellation

Cancel a gym membership, yoga course, or recurring class subscription with documented medical grounds.

Event ticket refund

Concert, festival, or sporting event cancellation. Many ticketing platforms accept medical documentation for refunds.

Travel insurance claim

Cancellation claims for major insurers (Iati, Heymondo, Allianz, AXA, World Nomads, Mapfre, and others). Issued by the treating physician, dated, and stating that travel isn't possible.

Medical certificates for work and school

Most justificantes we issue fall into one of two categories. Here's what to know about each.

Sick notes for work — justificante laboral

In Spain, missing a day of work because of illness usually means sending your employer a medical certificate, or doctor's note. A justificante from a colegiado physician — whether issued by a public, private, or telemedicine doctor — is the standard form of documentation across Spanish workplaces.

Under Article 20.4 of the Estatuto de los Trabajadores, employers can verify that an absence is genuinely medical. But under Article 22 of Ley 31/1995 and the GDPR/LOPDGDD 3/2018, they're only entitled to the apto/no apto verdict — your diagnosis stays private. PrescribeMe's certificates are designed to respect this boundary.

A justificante covers short absences. For longer-term sick leave with Seguridad Social pay, you'd need a parte de baja médica from a Centro de Salud or mutua — a separate document we don't issue, explained below.

Notes for school or university — justificante escolar

Spanish schools, universities, and academies routinely require a medical certificate when a student misses classes or a graded assessment for health reasons. Public schools (colegios, institutos), private and concertado schools, all Spanish universities (públicas, privadas, online), and exam centres for DELE, driving tests, and professional certifications accept justificantes from any colegiado physician.

Exam deferrals are the strictest use case — most institutions require the certificate to be dated on or near the day of the missed exam, so request it the same day if you can. For routine absences from class, timelines are more flexible.

Parents requesting a justificante on behalf of a minor are welcome; include the patient's details in the intake form.

Important

This is a justificante — not a parte de baja médica

A justificante médico is what you need to explain an absence to an employer, school, gym, event, or insurer. PrescribeMe issues these.

A parte de baja médica is a different document that triggers paid sick leave through the Seguridad Social. Under RD 625/2014, it can only be issued by a public-system doctor or a mutua — not by private telemedicine. If you need a parte de baja, visit your Centro de Salud.

Common questions

What people ask before they buy

Is this legally valid in Spain?

Yes. Any physician registered with the Colegio Oficial de Médicos may issue a justificante médico, whether they work publicly, privately, or by telemedicine — established under Ley 44/2003 (LOPS) and the 2022 CGCOM Code of Medical Deontology.

Our certificates are digitally signed under the eIDAS Regulation (EU) 910/2014 and Ley 6/2020 on electronic confidence services, giving them the same legal weight as a handwritten signature.

Will my employer accept it?

Yes. Article 20.4 of the Estatuto de los Trabajadores allows employers to verify illness, and a justificante from a colegiado physician is the standard form of documentation.

Note: under Article 22 of Ley 31/1995 and the GDPR/LOPDGDD 3/2018, your employer is only entitled to the apto/no apto verdict — not your diagnosis. Our certificates respect this.

How long does it take?

Most requests are reviewed and issued the same day. After you complete the intake form, a physician reviews your case and the signed PDF arrives by email or message once approved.

Can I get a certificate backdated to cover days I was already ill?

Certificates are dated when issued — we don't falsify dates of issue. However, the document can describe an illness period the doctor assesses, including days prior to the consultation, based on your account and clinical picture.

Does my school or university have to accept it?

Schools and universities in Spain routinely accept justificantes from colegiado physicians for absences and exam deferrals. Individual institutions may have their own policies (such as submission deadlines), so check your school's rules — but the certificate itself is legally valid documentation.

Is this the same as a parte de baja médica?

No. A parte de baja médica is a separate document that triggers paid sick leave through the Seguridad Social. Under RD 625/2014, it can only be issued by a doctor in the public health system or a mutua — not by private telemedicine.

PrescribeMe issues justificantes médicos. These are valid for employers, schools, gyms, events, and travel insurers, but they do not initiate Social Security sick pay. If you need a parte de baja, you must visit your Centro de Salud.

Will my travel insurance accept this for a cancellation claim?

The major travel insurers — including Iati, Heymondo, Allianz, AXA, World Nomads, Mapfre, True Traveller, Insure&Go, Chapka, and others — accept Spanish medical certificates for cancellation claims, provided the certificate comes from a treating physician (not a family member), is dated after policy purchase, and explicitly states the condition makes travel impossible. Our certificates are written to meet these requirements.
