The good news is that Benidorm is one of the easiest places in Spain to be treated in English. The town has catered to British and Irish visitors since the 1960s, and its two private hospitals were built around the foreign patient. The complication is choosing the right door: the wrong one can turn a free consultation into a bill for several hundred euros, or a ten-minute prescription into a wasted afternoon.

Benidorm offers five realistic routes to an English-speaking doctor: the two private hospitals (Hospital Clínica Benidorm and IMED Levante), independent private clinics, a doctor visiting your hotel, the public system if you hold a GHIC or EHIC, and an online consultation. The right route depends on how urgent the problem is, which card you carry, and your budget.

Which Benidorm hospitals have English-speaking staff?
Both of Benidorm's private hospitals treat foreign patients as core business, not an exception, and both run emergency departments that never close. Neither accepts the GHIC or EHIC — they are private — so you pay directly or through travel insurance.
Hospital Clínica Benidorm (HCB)
Av. Alfonso Puchades 8 · 96 585 38 50 (phone line staffed 8:00–20:00; the emergency department itself runs 24 hours) · ambulance 900 380 088. HCB opened in 1986 during Benidorm's first tourist boom and built its whole care model around the foreign patient. It was the first private hospital in the Valencian Community accredited by the Joint Commission International, and it keeps a dedicated interpreter team plus separate patient lines for Scandinavian (900 38 05 80), Dutch (639 312 615) and Russian (900 87 88 50) speakers — a reasonable proxy for how routinely English is handled. The hospital has 140 beds, intensive care, and outpatient clinics running Monday to Friday, 8:00–20:00. It also operates a 24-hour home-visit emergency doctor through the same number, covered later in this guide.
Hospital IMED Levante
C/ Dr. Santiago Ramón y Cajal 7 · urgencias 900 22 33 44. IMED Levante opened in 2004 as Hospital de Levante and, after its recent expansion, is the largest private hospital in the province of Alicante. Its emergency department runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year, with direct access to radiology, laboratory and admission. Outpatient clinics run Monday to Friday 8:00–20:00, and blood tests are taken without appointment on weekday mornings and Saturday mornings. The group publishes its patient information in English and works with the major international insurers.
Between the hospitals sit Benidorm's private clinics. The walk-in multi-specialty centre on Av. Europa 6–8 (Centro Clínico Europa, in the same complex as Clínica Europa) is the best known in the hotel zone, and directory listings show general-medicine consultations in town from roughly €30–60. Clinic details change more often than hospital ones, so confirm hours and prices by phone before walking over.
Can I use my GHIC or EHIC in Benidorm?
Yes — but only at public facilities, and that distinction catches out more Benidorm visitors than any other rule in Spanish healthcare. A UK GHIC (or an in-date EHIC) entitles you to medically necessary state healthcare on the same basis as a Spanish resident: free at the point of use at a public centro de salud (health centre) or public hospital. It covers nothing private, and it is not a substitute for travel insurance.
The trap is geography. The clinics closest to the hotels are overwhelmingly private, and the UK Foreign Office warns specifically that some hotels call private doctors or private ambulances for unwell guests — where the GHIC and EHIC are not accepted, and the bill follows you home. Before anyone treats you, ask one question: "¿Es un centro público?" If the answer is no and you expected card cover, you are in the wrong building.
The misunderstanding we hear about most often in our own consultations is exactly this one: a traveller who walked into the nearest walk-in clinic with a GHIC in hand, was treated kindly and efficiently, and only discovered at the desk afterwards that the card meant nothing there. The card did not fail; it was simply shown in a private business.
Three practical points for card holders. First, carry the card and your passport together; public desks will want both. Second, prescriptions issued in the public system are not free with a GHIC — you pay the standard resident co-payment at the pharmacy, which for visitors is 50% of the medicine's price, or 10% if you can show you receive a UK State Pension. Third, if you are already in Benidorm and the card is lost or was never packed, the NHS Overseas Healthcare Services can issue a Provisional Replacement Certificate over the phone (+44 191 218 1999) so a public hospital can still bill the UK rather than you.

Where are Benidorm's public health centres?
Benidorm's public primary care runs through three centros de salud under the Marina Baixa health department, and one of them quietly solves the hardest problem in resort healthcare: what to do at 3 a.m. All three see GHIC and EHIC holders for medically necessary care; consultations are usually in Spanish, so take a translation app or a Spanish-speaking friend if you can.
Centro de Salud Rincón de Loix (Avda. Zamora 5) sits in the middle of the Levante hotel zone and is the one most visitors should memorise. Its normal consultation hours are Monday to Friday 8:00–21:00 (reduced to 8:00–15:00 in July, August and September), but the reason it matters is its atención continuada — out-of-hours urgent care — which runs Monday to Friday from 15:00 through the night to 8:00, and around the clock on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Centro de Salud Foietes (Av. Venezuela 12) serves the west side of town near the old centre — urgencias 966 870 501, appointments 966 870 500 — and Centro de Salud Tomás Ortuño (C/ Tomás Ortuño 69) covers the streets above the old town; outside its own hours, Tomás Ortuño's patients are directed to Rincón de Loix. If your problem needs a hospital rather than a GP, the public emergency department for the whole area is at Hospital Marina Baixa in neighbouring Villajoyosa (Av. Alcalde En Jaume Botella Mayor 7), a short taxi ride from Benidorm, open 24 hours with urgencias phones 966 907 235 and 966 907 236. A €102 million expansion of that hospital, including a larger emergency department, is reported to be under way, with €29.4 million budgeted for 2026 — worth knowing only because building works can change entrances and parking.
How much does a doctor cost in Benidorm?
Anywhere from nothing to several hundred euros, and the difference is the door you choose. Public care with a valid GHIC or EHIC is free for medically necessary treatment. Hospital Clínica Benidorm runs a 24-hour home and hotel emergency doctor service (urgencias a domicilio) arranged through its main number, 96 585 38 50, with its own ambulance fleet behind it — the most established call-out option in town, and the one with a full hospital attached if the visit turns into an admission.
Beyond HCB, several independent call-out and video-doctor services market themselves to Benidorm tourists, some around the clock. The category is legitimate, but quality and pricing vary, so apply three checks whichever one you ring: agree the full fee before the doctor sets off, confirm the doctor is colegiado (registered with a Spanish medical college), and ask for an itemised invoice — your travel insurer will want it. Remember that any home visit is private by definition: the GHIC and EHIC do not apply, whatever the website's branding suggests.

Can I see a doctor online instead?
For most non-emergency problems, yes — and in Benidorm it is often the most sensible first step. Doctors licensed in Spain can lawfully assess patients remotely and issue Spanish electronic prescriptions, and several English-language services operate in the town, typically charging €20–39 for a video consultation by their own published prices.

Do I need a doctor's note for my insurance or airline?
If illness has cost you money in Benidorm, almost certainly yes. Travel insurers ask for medical evidence before paying out on a cancelled excursion, a missed flight or a curtailed holiday; airlines may ask for one before waiving a change fee; and employers and universities back home expect dated documentation for the days you lost. What online and private care cannot do
An honest map of the limits, because they exist. No online service — ours included — can examine you, and no ethical one pretends otherwise. A doctor reviewing your case remotely cannot listen to your chest, feel an abdomen, or look in an ear; if your problem needs any of that, the right place is one of the in-person options above, and a good online doctor will tell you so rather than prescribe blind.
Spanish law also draws hard lines around certain medicines. Drugs that require Spain's special narcotics prescription — strong opioids and ADHD stimulants among them — cannot be issued through an ordinary consultation, online or otherwise.
